NeWS to KnOW

Unemployed Alabamians can now get help catching up on their mortgages and preventing foreclosure under a new state program. Governor Robert Bentley announced yesterday that a program called Hardest Hit Alabama is now available statewide. This program is part of a federal stimulus program that has allocated $2 billion dollars to help unemployed Americans keep their houses.

This new program is available for out-of-work homeowners who qualify for unemployment compensation benefits. You cannot owe more than $258,690 on your mortgage and must have an annual income less than $75,700 to qualify for the program. You can qualify for up to $15,000 over a 12-month period to use on your mortgage. You do not have to repay the money if you stay in your house for 5 years. Applications are available online for those who are interested.
